While there are several topics missing from the draft framework for RSE, the most glaring omission was gender diversity. In order to raise awareness of this issue, a range of expert organisations and academics expressed their support for the importance of including education about gender diversity in schools. Education provides an opportunity to break down misunderstanding and build empathy, which we know leads to decreased bullying, discrimination, and violence – making schools safer for all students.
Sexual Wellbeing Aotearoa also provided a submission to the Ministry of Education on the framework, which was open for public consultation and feedback from 11 April until 9 May.
