Course description
Bodies, Boundaries and Being Me: exploring sexual wellbeing Ngā Tīnana, Ngā Pātanga, Ko Au: te Tūhura i te Oranga Ai is a free resource, comprising of a programme and training – available to kaimahi supporting people with an intellectual disability.
Bodies, Boundaries and Being Me builds knowledge, skill and attitude to enable sexual wellbeing for people with an intellectual disability. It is designed for disability organisations, kura and schools to use alongside people with an intellectual disability, aged from 13 years old.
The programme covers eight modules which use a combination of interactive activities and kōrero, and prioritises creating a safe space to learn and talk together.
The eight modules cover:
- body awareness
- puberty and physical changes
- identity, culture and orientation
- consent and boundaries
- healthy relationships and communication
- pregnancy and reproduction
- sexual health and contraception
- digital safety and getting help.
The training can be delivered to any kaimahi who supports people with an intellectual disability with their wellbeing. The training is free, in-person and builds skill and confidence to facilitate this programme with tāngata whaikaha.
Participants of the programme are young people aged 13+ and adults with intellectual disabilities – sometimes alongside sensory, physical, learning or neurodivergent conditions. Participants want practical knowledge about topics like bodies, relationships, pleasure, consent and reproductive choices.
Bodies, Boundaries and Being Me has been designed by Sexual Wellbeing Aotearoa in partnership with a disability support service, weaving together expertise and knowledge in both disability support and sexual wellbeing. It is built on national and international best practice and evidence; and has values such as equity, inclusiveness and accessibility embedded throughout.
