For NZ registered nurses, nurse practitioners, midwives and doctors. This is a four-day blended course, comprised of 9 hours of online self-directed pre-requisite courses, and a two day workshop followed by a 60-90 minute assessment on the third day. This course offers the opportunity to gain knowledge and develop skills in contraception and sexual health.

Course description
This is a four-day blended course, comprised of 9 hours of online self-directed pre-requisite courses, and a two day workshop followed by a 60-90 minute assessment on the third day. The pre-requisite courses are our STI Online 2025 and Contraception Overview and Practical Essentials Online 2025 courses. Please do not attempt to register for these pre-requisite courses yourself, as each learner will be manually enrolled into them by our Administrator once approved to attend the workshop.
Course Schedule and Assessment Information
- Days 1 and 2: The course runs from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM.
- Day 3 (Assessment Day): New from July 1, 2025 – in response to participant feedback and popular demand, the third day of the course has moved fully online. Assessments are now conducted via Zoom, and participants are only required for a 60–90 minute session. This change means you no longer need to set aside the entire day for assessment, allowing for greater flexibility.
The pre-requisite courses will take approximately nine hours to complete and must be completed 14 days prior to the commencement of the workshop.
The course covers:
- Contraception
- Emergency contraception
- Sexually transmissible infections
- Fertility awareness
- Legal and ethical responsibilities
- Māori cultural perspectives
- Youth issues related to sexual health
This course also includes an optional 4 hour clinical placement at a Sexual Wellbeing Aotearoa clinic.

Prerequisites
- Full New Zealand Nursing, Midwifery or Medical Registration
- Current Practicing Certificate
- Current Indemnity Insurance
For a Te Whatu Ora | Health New Zealand funded place on this course, you must meet at least one of the following criteria. The highest priority for funding starts at 1:
- Māori nurses/doctors working for Māori providers
- Non-Māori nurses/doctors working for Māori providers
- Pacific nurses/doctors working for Pacific providers
- Non-Pacific nurses/doctors working for Pacific providers
- Māori nurses/doctors working for health service providers
Community/rural/urban nurses/doctors (including Practice Nurses, Well Child Tamariki Ora Nurses)
*Te Whatu Ora | Health New Zealand employed health professionals are excluded from the funding criteria*

The Certificate in Contraception and Sexual Health activity (workshop only) has been endorsed by The Royal New Zealand College of General Practitioners (RNZCGP) and has been approved for up to 24 CME credits for Continuing Professional Development (CPD) purposes.
Additional CME credits will be provided for the two pre-requisite courses - STI Online (6 CME credits) & COPE Online (12 CME credits).
