Titled “Bodies, Boundaries and Being Me. Ngā Tinana, ngā Pātanga Ko Au”, is an eight-module programme. Facilitators can be trained by Sexual Wellbeing Aotearoa so that they can confidently deliver the course to tāngata whaikaha and people with an intellectual disability.
The resource replaces the previous programme “Colours of Sexuality” which was launched in 2015. Participants will build practical knowledge through interactive activities and kōrero about topics like bodies, relationships, pleasure, consent, and reproductive choices.
“Bodies, Boundaries and Being Me” is designed to be delivered by organisations working with tāngata whaikaha and people with an intellectual disability, aged from 13 years old. Facilitators may be anyone who professionally supports the health and wellbeing of tāngata whaikaha and wants to weave sexual wellbeing into their practice. This includes professionals like kaiako, support workers, allied-health workers, peer mentors, or community workers – who may be associated with organisations like schools, community hubs, residential services, or day programmes.
Tāngata whaikaha face greater barriers to achieving sexual wellbeing than non-disabled people, including limited access to accurate information, role models, and increased risk of abuse. “Bodies, Boundaries and Being Me” addresses these gaps by providing trusted knowledge, practical tools, and a framework grounded in Aotearoa-based evidence, Te Tiriti o Waitangi, and international human rights instruments.
