Fertility awareness
-
Fertility awareness is knowing when you are and aren't fertile.
Fertility is your ability to get pregnant. Most people are more fertile, or less fertile, at different points in their monthly menstrual cycle. Fertility awareness is knowing when you are and aren’t fertile.
-
-
You can use fertility awareness to:
- Help you understand your menstrual cycle
- Help you plan a pregnancy
- Help you avoid a pregnancy
Fertility awareness is:
- Typically, 75% effective at preventing pregnancy
- Cost effective — although it can cost to learn how to use it properly
- Acceptable to people with religious or cultural concerns about contraception
- Low impact — no chemicals or products involved
- Good for developing awareness and understanding of your reproductive system
- More than just using an app to track your cycle. You will also need to check your fertility signs every day, like temperature and cervical mucus
Fertility awareness isn't:
- A reliable or accurate way to prevent pregnancy — If you’re ever unsure if you are fertile or not, it’s best to use contraception like condoms
- For people that have irregular periods — fertility is difficult to track
- Protection against sexually transmissible infections (STIs) — condoms and oral dams can protect against STIs
