April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month – a time to shine a light on the reality of sexual violence and take action to support survivors.
In Aotearoa, it’s estimated that only 7.6% of sexual assaults are reported to New Zealand Police, meaning a lot of survivors are left without the support and justice they deserve. Many survivors first open up to whānau or close friends, and the response they get can significantly influence their path to healing.
Too often, survivors face disbelief, blame, or silence when they share their stories. This can add to their trauma and prevent them from seeking help. We all have the power to change that. The Start by Believing campaign is a global movement that encourages us all to respond with belief, compassion, and support. When someone discloses, our response can make all the difference.
You can pledge to believe when someone says they have experienced harm, support survivors on their journey to healing and justice, and challenge harmful attitudes by following the link below:

This month, let’s commit to breaking the cycle of silence. Your belief could be the first step in someone’s healing journey.
Sexual Wellbeing Aotearoa is proud to be part of bringing the global Start by Believing campaign to the Bay of Plenty, along with other agencies that support survivors, including Tautoko Mai Sexual Harm Support Agency, Tautoko Tāne Male Support Services Bay of Plenty, and Tauranga Living Without Violence.
These agencies will be collecting pledges online and in public spaces as part of expressing commitment to supporting, validating, and empowering survivors, as well as challenging harmful attitudes about sexual assault.
If you or someone you know needs help, please reach out to Safe to Talk – a 24/7 helpline for people affected by sexual harm: 0800 044 334.
