Let's Talk: Contraception

  • FREE online self-directed course for any adult wanting to build knowledge and confidence to talk about contraception with young people.

    Free

    Online course

    • Course description

This course is aimed at adults who want to build their knowledge and skills to be able to confidently talk to young people about contraception, including parents, whānau and caregivers and professionals.  It covers three main areas:

      • Introduction to contraception: includes the context of young people and contraception in Aotearoa New Zealand, some key statistics, and defining contraception.
      • The different types of contraception: covers key information about the most common types of contraception available in Aotearoa New Zealand, including hormonal and barrier methods, and Long-Acting Reversible Contraception (LARCs).
      • Tips for talking:  skill-building and confidence-boosting tips for how to talk to young people about contraception in a holistic and safe way.

This course is aimed at non-clinical professionals.  Whilst it covers clinical information, it is tailored towards parents, whanau and professionals that do not have clinical backgrounds and want to talk to young people in a general sense about contraception, rather than from a medical standpoint (e.g. recommending specific types of contraception to a young person).  It explores how supporting adults can give clear, relevant, key information about contraception in a neutral and safe way, without overwhelming a young person or overstepping boundaries.

This is a flexible course that be can completed all at once, or can be re-visited or completed as and when you need it, for example:

      • If you get a question from a young person that you need advice on how to answer
      • If you want to upskill on specific types of contraception (e.g. the pill)
      • If you are planning to deliver a session on contraception in the near future and want to refresh your knowledge

When completed all at once, the course takes approximately 1-2 hours.   Each 'Contraception Options' module takes around 10-20 minutes to complete.
