The Ministry of Education is in the process of updating the New Zealand Curriculum.
Navigating the Journey aligns with the current 2007 Health and Physical Education curriculum, it does not align with the refreshed curriculum
From 2027, Years 9 and 10 will be required to use the refreshed curriculum
Years 0-8 can choose to continue to use the 2007 curriculum or refreshed curriculum from 2027, until it becomes a requirement from 2029 onwards
Visit the Ministry of Education website for more information on the curriculum update. Find out more on our Let’s talk sex ed page.
Sexual Wellbeing Aotearoa is currently developing an exciting new online toolkit for schools that aligns with the refreshed health curriculum. The Schools Toolkit will be released in phases from Term 1, 2027, starting with Years 9 and 10.
As a result, Navigating the Journey will not be updated and will gradually be replaced by the Schools Toolkit as new resources become available. While Navigating the Journey remains a valuable and clinically accurate resource, we encourage schools to review its content when planning lessons, including any external links to videos, websites, and supporting materials. If you require support or have any questions, please contact Health Promotion.
Navigating the Journey is a comprehensive programme for educators delivering Relationships and Sexuality Education in school-based settings. It is designed to meet rangatahi at their stage of development — and build on their previous year’s learning. Navigating the Journey is full of lesson plans and activities for Years 1-10.
