- Making the uncomfortable comfortable – celebrating International Nurses Day
-
Today, 12 May, is International Nurses Day. Held on the anniversary of Florence Nightingale’s birth, this is a day dedicated to celebrating nurses around the world and the real difference they make in peoples’ lives.
At Sexual Wellbeing Aotearoa, nēhi (nurses) are vital to the services our organisation offers. Our 68 nurses, 5 nurse practitioners, and 2 nurse leads are experts in sexual and reproductive health – a sensitive topic for many – and they’re champions when it comes to easing our clients’ minds and making the uncomfortable feel comfortable. Today offers us the opportunity to reflect on how their compassion, dedication, and care makes a real difference in our clients’ lives.
These 5-star Google reviews from our clients offer just a sample of the impact our nurses have.

I went in today to get my rod removed out of my arm. As someone who is terrified of needles and anything to do with being cut open, B made the experience amazing. She was super lovely from the beginning, making me feel calm and reassuring me, she talked to me through out, and that made me feel super calm as it was a distraction from getting it taken out. She answered all my silly questions and was just all round lovely!"

Who was Florence Nightingale?
Florence Nightingale is often called the founder of modern nursing. She led a group of nurses caring for British soldiers injured in the Crimean War in 1854, where her focus on cleaning and washing hands significantly improved conditions. This was the foundation of the disease control methods we know today. She also helped set up and run the first professional nursing school at St Thomas’ Hospital in London, the Nightingale School of Nursing.
