Tonga – Amanaki Lelei project
-
The Amanaki Lelei project aims to improve sexual and reproductive health (SRH), reduce unintended pregnancies and reduce sexually transmitted infections among key sub-populations in Tonga. The project is implemented in partnership with the Tonga Family Health Association (TFHA), and funded by New Zealand’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade.
-
While progress in sexual and reproductive helath (SRH) and maternal health have been made in Tonga in recent years, the nation still has high levels of unmet need for contraception, high rates of adolescent and unintended pregnancies, and high rates of sexually transmissible infections (STIs).
Beginning in 2025, the Amanaki Lelei project is the newest of Sexual Wellbeing Aotearoa’s international projects. Through this project, Sexual Wellbeing Aotearoa and TFHA partner on a range of activities including:
Delivering SRH awareness sessions and clinical outreach in Tongatapu, Vava'u, and Ha'apai
Building relationships through SRH advocacy with key stakeholders
Developing and distributing Information, Education and Communication (IEC) materials
Providing clinical, health promotion and monitoring and evaluation training to TFHA staff

About the Tonga Family Health Association (TFHA)
-
TFHA has been providing SRH health services in Tonga since 1975. TFHA’s current work extends across the spectrum of service provision, advocacy, and crisis response, and other critical areas such as youth engagement and comprehensive sexuality education. SRH, maternal and child services, and fertility and counselling assistance are provided by TFHA.
TFHA plays a pivotal role in improving the quality of life of individuals through quality sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) services and shaping the SRHR response through advocacy in line with the International Planned Parenthood Federation’s (IPPF) mission and vision in Tonga.
